Tom Cummins- Educate Kids
Tom Cummins Enlightens Families
CEO Tom Cummins and President Jim Bridgeforth intend to educate society and our children on the abounding ways we can help the environment. Of course the obvious ways we can help are using green energy, recycling, and driving fuel efficient or even battery operated cars. Carpooling, using reusable grocery bags, and practicing energy saving techniques; these are all great ways to help… but there is more!
Today is about more then just helping the environment and conserving it for our next generations to come. Today is about passing the torch of awareness and preservation on to the next generation. What can we do to educate our children and lead by example?
Don’t Assume They Know
Of course there are the simple things we can do. For example, go to a park with the kids and talk to them about wildlife, food chains, and how every living being in the world depends on a clean environment. Talk to your kids about what littering and pollution does; tell your kids why it is so important to be mindful of our waste. Tom Cummins leads by example in emphasizing the importance of green and renewable sources. Tom Cummins uses renewable energy sources all through his house.
More schools and homes are separating trash and publicizing the importance of recycling. But we can also use old magazines and newspapers for arts and crafts to conserve materials. “Camping safely and putting out fires properly is a good way to educate” (Baras 2008). Kids should know the danger of forest fires, we should teach our children how forest fires start and how they affect the environment. Trees advocate fresh air and cleaner environments. When trees burn down, natural cycles that reduce carbon monoxide are less effective.
Teach and Lead By Example
In our communities it is important that we show our kids there is power in numbers. One person can make a difference on their own, but when we unite and come together we can make an even bigger difference. Help your neighbors, carpool, share stuff with each other. “Sharing tools that don’t get used often is helpful, and buying used furniture”(Baras 2008). One might ask why? Well because products take up energy and fuels to produce. Taking care of belongings and making them reusable saves energy, because demand for new product manufacturing declines the longer we reuse products.
Other industrial and proactive solutions are using timers for appliances. Avoid opening oven doors while cooking. Try prepping all your food in one day so that you only have to preheat your oven once. Purchase food in bulk to reduce waste from wrappers, and reuse containers if you are able. Also, “cleaning all your filters helps appliances” (Baras,2008) work more efficiently and use less energy. Of course we know energy efficient light bulbs are better to use, and washing your car in the grass is helpful as well. Don’t poor chemicals down the sink, remember that all goes into our drains, sewer systems and then oceans.
Tom Cummins’ Experience
Tom Cummins says, one of the funnest things we can do with our kids, is “plant a new plant in a home garden every week or month” (Baras 2008). Go pick up trash/litter with your kids. Floridians are known to have watermelon growing contests in the family. Plant some seeds and see who can grow the biggest one! This shows our kids the difference between non-renewable and wasteful products compared to a renewable source. We can teach each other and learn the importance of the giving and taking of mother nature. Teach your kids about compost and how it helps keep soils rich. Teach why it makes more sense to reuse this as a fertilizer source v.s adding unneeded waste to the garbage can and landfills.
